Solar Eclipse

On Sunday, May 20th, there was a solar eclipse that was visible in our area.  It was only a partial eclipse for us, but was very impressive.  We started out with the "pin hole camera" effect using a pin hole in a stiff piece of paper (paper plate) and focusing the image on another paper behind it (as Adam is doing in the picture above).

On this paper you can barely see the image in the middle of the paper, but it shows the beginning of the eclipse.

We then tried focusing it on something farther away.  Can you see the image on the stone?

We found we could make a small whole with our fingers and see an image of the eclipse!

Our neighbors, the Slades, have welding masks, so we looked through them.  You could see the eclipse very well through the mask with your eyes, but we weren't able to get a good picture with the camera.

Even the leaves on the neighbor's tree served as filters and produced all these eclipse images on our garage door.  Cool!

We tried everything - here is a picture of the eclipse coming through binoculars.

As the eclipse was coming to a close, Dan got this one last shot.  It was fun to be out with our neighbors watching this event of nature.  We even knocked on a few doors to tell people to come out and see what was happening.  We are nerds like that.
