South Mountain Hike

In mid-June while the mornings were still cool, Dan and Adam headed to South Mountain to hike the Mormon Loop Trail.

They saw some wildlife along the way.

Lots of rock formations.

Dan kept track of their elevation gain, time and distance with the GPS.

Adam in his hiking hat and camelbak.

One of their goals was to reach Fat Mans Pass.  As you can see it is very narrow.

Adam headed through the pass.  He made it through, but his hat was too wide.

Dan removed his hat and made it through the pass too.

The trail is pretty dry in June, but there are some fun things to see.

Here is one area where hikers have to crawl through.  See how shiny the rock is from all the oil from people's hands as they climbed through.

Adam took a tumble (see his right knee) but he had his first aid kit which they made in 11-year-old scouts in his camelbak and was able to treat his wound with Dan's help.  A scout is prepared!

There are several interesting spots on the trail to get through.

A shot of Dan and Adam on the Mormon Loop Trail.

There are even hieroglyphics along the way.

Heading back to the car with a panoramic view of Phoenix.

The end of the trail.

Adam gave the hike a thumbs up!  They will probably hike this trail again - but in cooler weather!

That is a real nice hike. Suzanne and I have hiked that a couple of times. "Fat Man Pass" was quite comical for a couple of 50 year old women though. They probably should name it - "Fat Men Should Probably Not Try to Pass Here".

That looks like a fun hike but I think I'd for sure wait until it's cooler. Adam looks so cute!
