Famous Americans
Every year the 5th graders pick a famous American and do research, writing and illustrations. After about three weeks of work, the students put a poster presentation together and dress up like their American.
Adam chose John Wesley Powell, an explorer and map-maker. He is the man Lake Powell was named for. Adam had a great poster board, and put together some items that represented Powell's life. We also went on a fun trip to a local candy store and bought candy rocks for Adam to hand out since Powell also studied rocks.
If you look closely, Adam is missing one arm. Powell lost an arm in the Civil War. Adam had fun telling his teacher, Mrs. Valles, that he couldn't write anything that morning because his right arm was missing! All of the students set up their presentation in the hall and the 4th and 6th graders come by to look and ask questions. Of course, all the parents come and take pictures too. Then in the afternoon the students make an oral presentation to their class. Adam did a fabulous job!
