Memorial Day in Pinetop

As noted in the previous post, we went to Pinetop for Memorial Day and stayed for the week. Lindsay and Boyd were only able to stay for the weekend, but we had some fun and relaxation while they were there. On Saturday, the group (including Luna) headed out for a leisurely hike and an opportunity to find some geocaches Adam had been researching on the internet.

Adam found his first geocache travel bug! It is an item with a unique code stamped on it. If you find it, you take it with you and place it in another geocache. You log it on the website, and the owner can follow the adventures of their travel bug.

Then later in the day we got out the log splitter and had a log splitting contest of sorts. Here is Bryce encouraging Adam. Luckily Boyd was there to figure out how to operate it. We were trying to use it in a vertical configuration! Thanks, Boyd!

Then Lindsay gave it a try.

We are discovering all kinds of things about having a cabin in Pinetop. One of them is that you need to rake up the pine needles each spring for fire prevention. We had taken rakes and garbage bags with us thinking we would make short work of this project. After talking to some neighbors and surveying the area around the cabin we realized the magnitude of the job. When someone came knocking at our door on Monday morning offering to do the work, we were ready to hire them. This is a picture of the pine needles they loaded from our neighbor's property, but our pile was pretty similar.

On Tuesday, Dan, Bryce and Adam took their clubs and went to the Pinetop Lakes Golf Course just down the road. It was a beautiful day, cool air, blue sky and lots of greenery. They played 9 holes and are looking forward to more chances to play golf in the future. Here is Adam teeing off.

On Thursday in the late afternoon, Dan, Bryce and Adam took the fishing boat to Hawley Lake for a little fishing time in the water. Dan had some of his dad's old fishing gear and let Adam use one of the fishing poles and lures. He told Adam it was an honor to fish with Grandpa Dahl's equipment. It didn't take long for Adam to catch a fish, and when he got home he was excited to tell Michelle - "Mom, I caught a fish with Grandpa Dahl's lure, and it was an honor!"

Dan and Adam with their 2 fish. Dan spent many camping/fishing/hunting trips in the White Mountains with his family. Now he gets to pass on the love of the area to his kids.

Adam is pretty proud of his fish. We had a great week in Pinetop and we are looking forward to many visits in the future. None of us wanted to leave. Be back soon....
