Memorial Day at the Cabin

We traveled to Mt. Graham to open up the cabin after the long winter. Arizona weather is hard to predict, and this weekend was no different. A storm had come through and cooled the temperatures considerably. As we headed up the mountain, we all took guesses on what the temperature would be at Hospital Flat. It was colder than anyone anticipated - a cold 46 degrees.


Poor Luna was aclimated to Arizona summer weather. So we got her a sweater, and Boyd wrapped her up in her blanket. She was pretty happy with all the attention Boyd gave her. We got to the cabin early enough on Friday to check for broken pipes, and get everything working. Luckily the cabin fared well over the winter.




Of course, the first thing on the menu when you go to the cabin is hot chocolate. Michelle made lemon poppyseed muffins, and since we had some cherries along, Adam built the "ultimate muffin" with a cherry on top. Looks like dessert more than breakfast.



One of Adam's favorite things is to go to the climbing rocks. Since this is the closet place to catch cell service for our phones, we happily obliged so we could check on Grandpa Porter.

Lindsay and Boyd joined us for some cool down time at the cabin. Lindsay spent the majority of her time with her nose in her books studying for her last exam the following Friday. Hard to believe she is almost finished with her first year of medical school.

Had to include this picture of Luna all bundled in her blanket. She claimed this chair as her own and was none too pleased if someone wanted to move her.

Since the cabin has no fireplace, we resort to using the flame of the stove to roast marshmallows. We forgot our roasting sticks, so Boyd, Bryce and Adam scouted the forest for good specimens, and then sharpened the ends. They worked great. S'mores - yummmmm.

On Sunday it finally warmed up enough to venture outdoors without a coat. Bryce and Adam headed into the forest to explore.

Bryce built this "water faucet" from hollow "bamboo" (actually skunk cabbage stalks - but don't tell him) and put a few pieces together so that water would flow through it. Pretty cool.

Can you find Dan on the porch (also studying his medical books - like father like daughter)? Michelle painted the doors green on Saturday morning, but they were still tacky by Monday when we left because it was so darned cold. But we soaked up the cold knowing we would be coming home to summer weather.

Luna even ventured out looking for squirrels and chipmunks. We call Luna a nose on four legs - she loved sniffing all the smells of the forest.

We had a great time - a nice relaxing weekend - just what we needed. We love to spend time at the cabin!!
