Geocaching in Colorado

Ever heard of geocaching?? If you have a handheld GPS, you can do it too. It's like a treasure hunt for grown-ups, but it's fun for kids too. Here is Adam checking out the coordinates for the first geocache. People go out into the world - in the city or in the country - and hide a small container with a prize inside. Then they post the GPS coordinates on www.geocaching.com so others can find it. When you find the cache, you bring something to trade - you remove the "treasure" inside the container and replace it with something of your own. Sometimes you just sign a log to show you were there. But no matter what is in the "treasure box" the hunt is the fun part.

On Saturday at the family reunion, Jeff and Sam took the kids and some adults (a group of 34 in all) and headed out to find three geocaches that were nearby.

These were a short hike from the road. So a caravan of cars took our group off into the Rockies, and then they hiked the rest of the way. Dan turned his GPS over to Adam and let him lead the way.

The next cache was found in an old abandoned log cabin.

The idea is simple, but it is addictive. When we got home to Gilbert, Adam jumped on the computer and found 10 geocaches within a mile or so of the house. One we have been passing by every day as we went to school! Adam is hooked. So if you see Adam with the GPS, and the rest of us trailing behind him, we are on the trail of the next geocache.
