Blackberries

Did you know blackberries grow well in Arizona? Dan's mom used to grow juicy berries in her backyard. We had a small garden of blackberries while we were in Tucson. We keep talking about planting some berries. Finally we remembered to plant them at the right time of year.

Last week Michelle found out about a new thornless variety (Blackberry bushes are extremely thorny) and located some at A&P Nursery. Before the rain started on Monday, Dan, Bryce and Conner got the plants in the ground and Dan got drip irrigation to them to hold them until our flood irrigation starts again (we are currently in dry up).

Blackberry bushes are a bare root plant. They are a little similar to roses - you prune them back to almost nothing at the end of winter and then they come back. Don't be surprised if you can't find the blackberry bush in the above picture. It really is a blackberry stick - just a twig that will hopefully bring us lots of yummy blackberries along with the other 7 twigs that were planted!
